It Defies Common Sense

Orthodox Jews walking to Temple
I'm sure you all have participated in one some time or another - Potluck lunches. This is where everyone brings a dish and the group enjoys each other's culinary creativity in celebration of something or another. There were a couple of potluck lunches that I participated in recently and I noticed that one lady did not participate for some reason or another. It occurred to me, without my asking and without her saying, that she was a member of the Jehovah's Witness Church. I approached her about it and she confirmed. Mind you, one of the celebrations was a potluck for July 4th - Independence and the other was for the boss' birthday.
How can a religious organization be opposed celebrating a country's independence? The country that you live in and enjoy certain liberties. It does not make sense to me. It seems that denomination avoids any kind of gathering, outside of their church. It could be a gathering to celebrate a month of good profits. What is your point in separating yourself from the group? Mind you, when there is no luncheon, you still interact with everyone on a business and sometimes social level. Do you believe that laughing and drinking with people that are not Jehovah's Witness will defile you? It might very well be that people in that group could have a stronger spiritual relationship with God than you. And this thing about not celebrating Birthdays; When you give it a little thought, it really does not make any sense. If one does not want to make a big bash about it, that's their prerogative, but to avoid those who celebrate birthdays or condemn the practice is nonsensical. What's wrong with toasting with friends and family on your birthday?
And, I'm not just picking on Jehovah's Witness. Orthodox Jews, who worship on Saturdays (Sabbath) do not believe in doing anything that is considered work on the Sabbath. They walk to the temple on Saturdays, because driving is considered working and using up energy. I don't know, but the last time I checked walking was more work than driving. Not to mention the men are dressed in black from head to toe in 90 degree climate. Does this mean they all have to reside close to a Synagogue? I know you will agree that this one really defies common sense.
No, I am not leaving out the Catholics. I remember when all of the gay stuff exploded in the Catholic church there was a movement to prevent gay priests from practicing in the church. News flash, the fact that they are non-marrying priest is what is helping them to become gay in the first place. They are not allowed to have relationships with the other sex; always surrounded by other men; and are not allowed to marry or have sexual relations with the opposite sex. Hello - if this is not enabling homosexuality, then you tell me. If they allowed priests to marry, it would solve a lot of problems in the Catholic Church. It just defies common sense not to allow priests to marry.
I'm sure I could go on and on if I delve into other religions. Lets not forget the radical Al-qeada religion, (notice I did not say Muslim) who tell their followers that if they blow up themselves in the name of their Allah they will get 70 virgins in the after life. I have an idea. How about not blowing up yourselves and get 1, 2, 3 maybe 10 virgins right here and now. Brilliant idea isn't it?
Sometimes people do things out of tradition, even though they don't really make much sense. They just continue to do it because its always been done that way. Do your religious practices defy common sense?
