Hi Olga,
Suggestion - google "Prof. Gates, please sit down." I stumbled on this piece while I was looking for a picture for my blog. I had already written my blog by the way, and was shocked to see this writer was right on point with me. I had to call my daughter and read her a part of his article because I had just finished talking to her and my son about what I was thinking about the incident and what I was about to blog. After a while people of that status, its no more about black as much as it is about class. They feel insulted that someone could treat them a certain way because they belong to a certain class. I think after a while they don' see themselves as black anymore, as the writer almost suggests. You might have missed my point a bit. I did not suggest that racial profiling does not exists, I'm saying he,on his puffing white cloud, should not be a poster child for it.
It should have given him all the satisfaction to show the police that he (as a black man) does indeed live in this neighborhood. They say living well is the best revenge. If the Police had any hidden racial agendas all he could do is walk away with the realization thatthere are intelegent, smart, calm blacks that live in the area. Proving them wrong - should be his satisfaction.

Race vs. Ego? You should have titled it "House Negro vs. Field Negro". Why do we expect whites to understand when black continue to tear down their own. If you have not experience the struggle, I suggest you (we all) read more books on the black experience in America. 'UPPITY BLACKS'??? They paved the way for you to get the 'minor' in Political Science and 1 year of Law School. I'm sure getting where you are academically did not compare to how this "Uppity BLACK Harvard Professor" got where he is today. If statistic is correct, you too will experience it. Not too long ago, there are those who would have told our President he was 'Uppity' to even think he could become president....Negro know your place...in essence, thats what this police officer was saying-know your place.

Pat,
I was about to say the same thing Stephen did, but he said it perfectly so I will only agree with what he said.
I felt the same way and I tried to explain this to people but not everyone can understand the combination of lupus and his skin disorder.
The nose part, first of all he fell on stage and broke his nose, that how he first started with the cosmetic surgery.
I love MJ and his music, and I dont care about the negative things people say "HE IS THE KING OF POP" and that's all their is to it.
Lilly

I think you bring up some excellent points and enjoyed your article. I agree with Stephen that the media played a major role in the public's view of the change in Michael's pigmentation - that it was a chosen path rather than the result of the disease afflicting him. The thing that makes me the saddest about his passing is that there weren't enough people around him telling him how attractive he was, that he was so uncomfortable with his looks that no plastic surgery was enough. Yes, he may have been a little more attractive after the first nose job, but it should have stopped there. If you go back to 1983, you'll see what I mean - he was SUCH a good looking young man.

I appreciate your points Stephen, but I submit that trust, admiration and infatuation are three different things. The people you mentioned that he trusted were (like) family to him. Maybe he was infatuated by the others because they had something he could never really have? They say the grass is always greener.........

I can apprecaite the skin disease theory as well, by why so many surgeries on his nose? Why go out of your way to have white kids?

Why...,why.....why...??? If it looks like a duck and walks like a duck.... (no puns intended, really...)

We want to defend Michael because we love him. I admire a lot about him too, but I do also have some concerns and I will verbalize them along with the admiration.
